At least three dead and one missing from a strong explosion in a building on Toledo Street
Four people have died and a dozen have been injured as a result of the gas explosion that occurred in the parish building belonging to the Virgen de La Paloma Church, located on Toledo Street in Madrid.
The deceased are the priest Ruben Perez that he had been seriously injured after the explosion. Shortly before 3 in the morning he left the operating room and died in the ICU, as reported by the chain Cope. Another person who has lost his life in the explosion is David santos, 35 years old and leaving a wife and four children. David was checking the boiler with the priest when the tragedy occurred. His loss was confirmed at night, after firefighters were able to rescue his body from the rubble.
The other two deceased persons, whose identity has not been revealed, were a man and a woman of 85 who, apparently, were walking next to the building at the time of the explosion.
As a result of the violent explosion, the upper floors of the building, including the attics, have practically disappeared. According to the firefighters of the Madrid City Council, it will be demolished under control since practically only the structure has remained standing.
There are at least eight injured: six minor, one less serious due to a broken leg. Two priests are in good condition, one of them, in fact, was on the fifth floor of the building when the tragedy occurred. With his mobile he recorded some images that OKDIARIO broadcast exclusively asking for help.
Three floors of the building have been completely destroyed. 40 firefighters have worked on the ground to secure the area. A crew has remained on guard until the demolition work begins early this Thursday. The building belongs to the Church of La Paloma, where there is also a school, and it is the habitual residence of priests. The affected building is a concrete and brick construction that has four floors, plus the attic.
The first call to 112 took place at 2:56 p.m. The gas deflagration has caused very important material damage in this block of four floors, belonging to the Archdiocese of Madrid, where a residence for the elderly, a school and the Church of La Paloma are located nearby.
At first, after the police cordoned off the area, a residence for the elderly was evacuated attached to the parish building. The professionals were taking out the elderly and neighbors of neighboring buildings. In the place a field hospital was set up where the wounded were treated at first, some of them transferred by ambulances – up to 11 attended the place – of the Samur Civil Protection.
One of the points in which the elderly are at the moment is Pavón Coffee, who has made this appeal on their social networks: “If someone has relatives in the center for the elderly in Toledo Street and wants to contact us, we are in shelter with them in nearby bars. DM if we can help you talk to them.”
