Dow Jones sustainable index rises 95% since 2011
From this Monday and throughout the week the Climate Summit 2019 will take place in Madrid. More and more people are becoming aware of the importance of sustainability and the stock market is no exception. For this, the DJSI World (Dow Jones Sustainability World Index) of world reference, and which includes the biggest companies in terms of market capitalization, environmental and social responsibility This index has been revalued by 95% since 2001.

Consumers pay more attention to the methods and levels of pollution of the companies and these, in turn, are committed to generating a benefit for society. In 2019, 318 firms have been chosen to become part of this index. In the case of Spanish companies, a total of 30 were selected, although finally only 15 managed to enter the group. The analysis is carried out by the Swiss company RobecoSAM, one of the largest investment groups in the world.
Santander is the most sustainable bank in the world
In the banking sector, there are four entities recognized for their environmental work: Banco Santander, BBVA, Bankinter and Caixabank. The company chaired by Ana Patricia Botín has been selected, for the first time in history, as the most sustainable bank in the world with a total of 86 points out of 100.
However, the banking sector is not the only one that has improved its position. In the construction sectors they have consolidated their position Ferrovial and ACS, which has been the only new incorporation of Spain into the index in 2019. On the other hand, energy and electricity companies have managed to gain a foothold in this list with the presence of Iberdrola, Endesa, Red Eléctrica, Enagás and Naturgy. The textile firm chaired by Amancio Ortega, Inditex, has not been left out of the index and together with the insurer Mapfre, put an end to Spanish companies belonging to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
In order to qualify to enter this index, companies must be quoted and have a market capitalization that adapts to the parameters imposed by RobecoSAM. In addition, companies must answer a form made up of more than 600 questions, which have corporate social responsibility as their central theme.
